Could Music Production Be the Career for You?

Once upon a time, you could only study music production at very liberal universities or a handful of art schools. Today, however, they have become more commonplace. This is also because musical entertainment has now become such a big industry. In fact, the average American spends more on entertainment than they do on their food and homes!

How to Choose a Music College

So, you have decided to get into music production. Which music college do you choose? While a liberal art, this is a serious business. At the same time, who you know remains hugely important in this world. This also shows just how important the school’s reputation is.

Most good music colleges also offer audio production programs. You can also study this at a community college, if a bachelor level is too high for you. While completing any of these programs is good for your career, you are certainly not guaranteed to get into the industry. The better known your program is, the more chance you have to become involved in the real industry. With a community college degree, you may get a job in a local nightclub, but if you want something bigger and better, you need a better college.

There are a number of very good schools and colleges that have excellent reputations across the country. It is always recommended that you contact at least five different schools in order to find the one that is most suitable to your needs. Different people have different requirements, which means there may be multiple issues that you need to compare. Some of the things to look into include:

  • Curriculum – which classes and majors are taught at the school?
  • Cost – how much do you have to pay per unit, year or degree?
  • Is financial aid available?
  • Does the school offer scholarships?
  • Where is the school located? Geographical location may be incredibly important to you.
  • What is the student to faculty ratio?
  • What kind of on campus activities are offered besides classes?
  • Is there campus accommodation and how much does it cost?
  • How many graduates find work in a relevant field within a year of graduating?
  • What is the background of faculty staff?
  • Do you have to audition to get in?

These are just some of the important questions you may want to ask yourself. However, only you can decide which of these issues weighs most heavily for you. It does demonstrate the importance of comparing the market. Do also refer to lists such as those provided by the U.S. World & News Report, which will highlight the rankings of the different colleges that you are considering.

Music production is one of the most lucrative and steady musical careers out there. While many people would love to be a famous star, the reality is that very few stars climb the ladder without falling out of grace again. If you do manage to get involved in serious music production, it is more likely that you will have a job for life.
